Granite is an inspiring children’s book about perseverance trust and following your dream. Written by the wife-husband team of 4-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher, Yukon Quest champion David Monson, and colorfully illustrated by Sarah Douglas, the book celebrates a unique bond that mushers have with their dogs through the story of Susan’s legendary lead dog Granite.
As a puppy, Granite was a shy, scraggly runt, easily pushed around by his littermates. However Susan saw his potential and recognized in him the heart of a champion. She believed in him and worked very hard to help him develop his self-confidence and skills at leading her team. While training for the Iditarod sled dog race Granite became very ill. The veterinarians said he would never race again. Susan saw it differently and worked very hard with Granite as she always had with dogs going overcoming challenges. Granite recovered and confidently led her team to the front of the race when suddenly they were caught in a raging arctic blizzard. The dogs and Susan depended on Granite to get them through the storm. He called on his inner strength and courage to keep them safe. That team went on to win the Iditarod and set a new record. This special dog Granite ran in lead on Susan’s team for many years to come, becoming one of the most decorated sled dogs of all time.
